Should Liverpool stick with the EIGHT changes made from FA Cup tie with Wolves?

>

From potential new owners to mid-table woes, it really has been a season of change for Jurgen Klopp and his Liverpool side.

Sticking with the theme, Klopp made eight changes to his starting line-up, since their humiliating defeat against Brighton, to ensure they cruised to a 1-0 win over Wolves in their FA Cup replay on Tuesday night.

The Reds finally won again, after a three-game winless run, and, with a pivotal clash against Chelsea looming, sports mail evaluate which of the eight changes should keep its place over the weekend.

Caoimhin Kelleher

Understandably, this will not be a decision that will concern Klopp when he selects his team to face Chelsea at the weekend.

The Irish goalkeeper hardly made a misstep against Wolves, however this was helped by the fact that he barely made any action in the game.

The 24-year-old made two saves and helped Liverpool keep a clean sheet at Molinuex, but was not tested enough to warrant the displacement of Alisson Becker in goal for the Reds.

Verdict: Stay on the bench

james milner

Although Milner was not one of Liverpool’s standout players in the win at Molineux, he still has a chance to play against Chelsea on Saturday.

Trent Alexander-Arnold, the player Milner covered, endured a horrible game against Brighton at the weekend as the Reds went down 3-0.

The England international was exposed by winger Kaoru Mitoma on multiple occasions in the match and was unable to stop the Japan international from running towards goal several times.

Despite this, it would be a brave decision to leave out the 24-year-old right-back given his ability to conjure up defense-splitting passes from their deepest position.

jose gomez

The England defender has finally earned a place in Liverpool’s starting XI after a lengthy spell on the bench, with Joel Matip favored in defense in recent weeks.

Gomez played the full 90 minutes at Molineux and was instrumental in the Merseyside side keeping a clean sheet on the night, despite being booked.

Matip, on the other hand, has been struggling with his form of late. He was replaced by Gomez in the latter stages of his Brighton defeat, just two games after being hooked at half time during a humiliating loss at Brentford.

Konstantinos Tsimikas

Unfortunately for the Greek full-back, it looks like it will be a relatively easy decision for Klopp.

Despite securing victory over Wolves, Tsimikas did not look convincing in his left-back role that night. He completed just one of his six cross attempts in the match, leaving January signing Cody Gakpo hungry for early serve.

By comparison, his teammate Andy Robertson already has five Premier League assists this year and will likely start against Graham Potter’s Chelsea.

naby keita

Making his eighth appearance of the season, the Guinean international turned in the kind of performance that reminds one of why Liverpool spent £52.75m on him in 2017.

Keita formed a formidable partnership with Spanish duo Thiago Alcantara and Stefan Bajcetic, as they easily found their way into the home side at times.

Interestingly, Keita and Thiago have started just seven games together, including last year’s FA Cup final against Chelsea, and are unbeaten in all of those games.

With the Blues’ midfield looking like their weakest aspect in recent weeks, employing Keita in the heart of the pitch could prove useful for Klopp and his team.

Stefan Bajcetic

There aren’t many 18-year-olds who can break into this Liverpool first team, but after watching Stefan Bajcetic, you understand that he is unique.

The Spaniard has been a revelation for Klopp’s side this season since scoring in a 3-1 win over Aston Villa shortly after the Premier League restart last month.

He played 75 minutes against Wolves and seemed to have twice the energy of Brazilian midfielder Fabinho in recent weeks.

He was later voted Man of the Match by Reds supporters, suggesting that he won the support of Merseyside fans.

harvey eliott

This is a tough question. Obviously, Elliott scored Liverpool’s only goal against Wolves, a long-range shot into the net, but there’s a lot to consider here.

The 19-year-old has made 18 top-flight appearances this year, but typically his cameos come from a central midfield position.

However, Elliott emerged on the football scene as a winger and was given the chance to showcase his skills from the right flank against Wolves.

He put in a stellar performance against Julen Lopetegui’s team and was much more natural in the wing position. The only problem is that this is Mohamed Salah’s place.

Therefore, the only way to get Elliott into the starting line-up would be to remove Cody Gakpo, who has yet to score for Liverpool, and switch Salah to centre, with Elliott on the side.

fabio carvalho

It has been a somewhat difficult season for the former Fulham attacker. He has made 11 Premier League appearances this term but, like Elliott, has been out of position most of them.

However, against Wolves, Carvalho was chosen to play on the left wing, replacing Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain in Liverpool’s starting line-up.

His performance was encouraging and showed great promise for the highly-skilled talent, who had not featured for the Reds since before the World Cup.

Whether it was enough to earn him a starting place in the squad to face Chelsea at the weekend remains to be seen.

Verdict: Stay on the bench
