The wholesaler sells the pre-cooked eggs in large 5-pound boxes for less than $10, but their expiration date is tomorrow.
The unusual item has caused division online, with a fan of the product sharing it with a group of budget shoppers and being inundated with mixed opinions.
Australian shoppers were horrified after finding peeled and boiled eggs on sale at Costco, but some bargain hunters think it’s a great idea.
‘Costco alert. 2.5 kg of hard-boiled eggs. Save yourself time having to boil and peel the eggs,” said the impressed Costco shopper after seeing the cheap buy.
The eggs are produced by Pace Farm in New South Wales, and the packaging states that they can be used in nine different ways.
Even as a sandwich filling, garnish, in a salad or to prepare dishes like Scotch whiskey or curried eggs.
The wholesaler sells the precooked eggs in large 5-pound cartons for less than $10, but their expiration date is tomorrow.
However, not everyone was as impressed as the man who saw the product.
“I’m pretty sure I got poisoned just looking at this,” said one woman.
I can’t think of anything worse. I’ll just boil mine,” wrote another.
Many wondered why more buyers don’t know how to boil and peel an egg, yet they were criticized for their “ability” and “privilege.”
“Maybe there are other factors at play, like mobility or disabilities,” said one woman.
“You’d be surprised how many hospitals and nursing homes buy their eggs this way,” wrote another.
‘The ableism and privilege in these comments must end. Not everyone can peel eggs, not everyone has time,” said another.
Some buyers added that they are a great money and time saving idea for families and caterers.
It’s a great price. If she was serving curried egg and lettuce sandwiches, she’d be on it,” said one woman.
“I guess realistically it’s no different than buying shredded cheese or sliced vegetables. We know how, just choose not to! another wrote.
