“My whole family now calls me a ‘basket thief’. I promise you I’m not. I have just entered menopause and experience brain blurs on a regular basis. Forgive me.’

“I’ll send it back asap, in the meantime I’m sure you have others you can use.”

Amanda’s hysterical message left thousands in the lurch, as many applauded the mother for her honesty and wit.

“Send it back and get your money back,” one woman said.

‘NO! That was their only basket. What should the rest of us use?’ joked a second.

“I can empathize, but I’m renaming you ‘The Basket Case’,” a third laughed and another said, “Good peg basket!!”

“You wouldn’t be the first and you won’t be the last to do that – you’re a good, honest person – I’m sure Coles will forgive you,” another added.

Others shared their own shopping addiction, including a woman who accidentally forgot to pay for her entire store.

“I scanned my 10 odd items, put them in a bag, got sidetracked while chatting with a friend, and left without paying. We also stood around the front chatting for 15 minutes,” she recalls.

‘It wasn’t until I got home that it dawned on me that I hadn’t actually paid. I came back and they marked my transaction as a runner at the service desk.’

Some also had shopping baskets stolen with one saying ‘I did this in Bunnings a few months ago – was too embarrassed to give it back!’.

“I accidentally did this once and my adult son filmed me taking the basket out of the car and my reaction when I clicked what I had done,” a third customer replied.

‘Bring it back. My toddler pinched a pack of three men’s handkerchiefs over 40 years ago at Kmart West Lakes. I haven’t returned them and I still feel bad,” said one mother.
