Shooting near a Boston festival over the weekend leaves 5 injured

BOSTON — Five people were injured in a shooting near a festival in Boston on Monday, and police are looking for those responsible.

The shooting happened Sunday night in Franklin Park as a Dominican festival was ending. Police said three men and two women were injured but their injuries were not life-threatening. They were taken to a hospital. They did not give their ages or names.

“We need to hold these people accountable, whether it’s one person or multiple people who are responsible for this horrific act of shooting into a crowd,” Boston Police Chief Michael Cox told reporters Sunday night.

Cox said police heard the shots as the festival was ending and authorities were directing pedestrians out of the park. Police had no update Monday, including whether there was more than one shooter.

The shooting “really ruined what was a pretty successful event for the people here,” Cox said. “We’re going to hold them accountable, so we need the public’s help and support, but this really shouldn’t be happening in our city, not at this time.”

The shooting comes after Boston has been praised for reducing violent crime in the past year, with 37 homicides last year and only 10 so far this year, police said.
