Shooting kills 2 and wounds 2 in Oakland, California

OAKLAND, California — Two people were shot dead and two others injured Saturday morning after a verbal confrontation, San Francisco Bay Area police said.

Officers were called to the 1600 block of 83rd Ave. in a residential area of ​​East Oakland just after 9 a.m. and found four victims suffering from gunshot wounds, Oakland police said in a statement.

Two victims died at the scene and two others were taken to hospital, police said in a statement.

Multiple people became involved in a verbal altercation that turned deadly when one of the people pulled out a firearm and fired multiple shots before fleeing in a vehicle, police said.

Police are withholding the names of the victims until their relatives have been notified.

Oakland is a city of 400,000 that struggles with crime and public safety.

Oakland Mayor Sheng Thao is facing impeachment in November, as is the county’s district attorney, Pamela Price.

The home Thao shares with her partner and son was raided by the FBI in June as part of an investigation that also included the search of other homes belonging to a politically connected family that owns a recycling company.

Thao said that they did nothing wrong.
