A heated debate has erupted after a court dismissed charges against an Indiana driver who repeatedly shot one motorist and injured another in a near-fatal traffic incident in the middle of Fort Wayne.

Shocking dashcam video captured the moment a van driven by Jason Henkle, 42, turns from the center to the inside lane and cuts off a sedan driven by Alexander Mozee, 19.

Seconds later, Mozee accelerates and pulls up to the front, bringing Henkle's van to a halt as the traffic lights on Maplecrest Road turn red.

The teen jumps out of his car, followed by his passenger, and swings at the window of Henkle's driver's seat, shattering the glass as he punches right through it.

Henkle reaches for his Ruger .380 pistol, hitting Mozee twice and throwing glass over another motorist whose window was shattered by a stray bullet.

Seconds later, Mozee has swung his car in front of Henkle's, jumped out and walked to Henkle's car, where he throws a punch at the passenger window, shattering the glass and hitting his target in the head with the same blow.

Mozee was not seriously injured and Henkle was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, while Mozee was charged with battery.

Mozee was hit in the arm and shoulder and is seen staggering away while holding his hand.

Henkle told police he fired three shots to protect himself and his wife after Mozee hit him in the side of the head with the same swing that shattered his window.

Another nearby driver told police he heard up to four shots and suffered a large welt on his head after bullets shattered his passenger window and one came to rest in his car.

Mozee has a lawsuit pending, but Henkle's suit was dismissed by Allen Superior Court, to the surprise of some Reddit posters.

“In my situation, if you use deadly force in an act of self-defense, you must have made every reasonable attempt to de-escalate the situation before shooting someone,” PerdidoStation wrote.

“Trying to run someone off the road is certainly not de-escalation.”

“Sorry Homie, if you stop in front of a car and run up to punch them, you caused the violence,” st_samples added.

“The car in the left lane came rushing in, but the red car looked like it was in a full-blown collision,” 1knightstands wrote.

“The red car then tried to kill the child who hit their window. Red cars are 96 percent of the problem here.”

A third driver was injured when one of Henkle's bullets struck his car, shattering the window and sending shards of glass flying.

“All he had to do to avoid a confrontation and get out of that situation was let off the accelerator for five seconds,” Philosopherski said.

According to the National Highway Safety Traffic Administration, road rage has been involved in about 300 deaths over the past decade, including 230 homicides.

The incident in Fort Wayne was somewhat reminiscent of the attack in Portland in October, when wealthy businessman Geoffrey E. Hammond, 46, fatally shot another driver before pointing his gun at a pedestrian after the motorist “showed him the finger.”

In the wake of the Nov. 19 incident, hundreds of people were asked to comment, including many who said neither driver should be driving on the road.

“People who are completely uninvolved have the potential to die or be shot by idiots like this,” Packattack wrote.

“If you see something like this happening, you better pull over and wait ten minutes for the idiots to leave, because you never know when a gunfight might happen.”
