A women’s soccer match at the university descended into chaos on Sunday when two opponents came to blows.
Rutgers traveled to UMass for an afternoon game and chaos ensued after Scarlet Knights’ Gia Girman took down an opponent from behind in the 55th minute.
The UMass player’s teammate, Ashley Lamond, attempted to quickly take the free kick, but she and Girman became tangled as the former attempted to grab the ball.
Lamond then pushed Girman away, followed by punches in both directions, with Girman throwing her opponent to the ground.
Girman continued to hit Lamond while on top of her, while Lamond pulled her opponent’s hair, creating an ugly scene.

Players from both sides rushed to separate the two.
Ultimately, both Girman and Lamond were sent off and both teams had to play the final 35 minutes of the game with 10 players.
The home side eventually won 1-0 thanks to a goal from Bella Recinos in the 81st minute.
UMass secured their first win of the season with this result and is now 1-2-0.
Rutgers is now 1-1-1.
