A new poll shows Vice President Kamala Harris is trailing former President Donald Trump in Alaska, a state where Democrats haven’t won a presidential election in 60 years.
The new poll was conducted by Alaska Survey Research on September 11 and 12, following the ABC News presidential debate.
Kamala Harris trailed by just five points among likely voters in the northwestern state.
According to the poll, Trump received 47 percent of support, while Harris had 42 percent.
The last Democrat to win the so-called Last Frontier state was President Lyndon B. Johnson in 1964. It was the only time in the state’s history that a Democratic presidential candidate won Alaska.

Trump won Alaska in 2020 with more than 52 percent of the vote, winning by 10 points over President Biden, or just over 36,000 votes.
The 2020 result was the narrowest Republican margin in an Alaska presidential race since 1992.
In 2016, Trump won the state by more than 15 points over Hillary Clinton.
The latest polls show him still ahead, but the gap in the state has narrowed significantly since his first attempt at the White House.
While Harris’ chances of winning the Alaska election are slim, pollster Nate Silver wrote over the weekend that the vice president has a better chance of winning that state than Florida or Texas.
‘“Our model gives Harris a 22 percent chance of winning Alaska — significantly higher than her chances in, say, Florida or Texas,” Silver wrote in a blog post Sunday.
The bottom line is that Harris’ campaign has argued that Florida is in play this year.
Survey conducted on September 11 and 12 among likely voters
A poll by Alaska Survey Research found that 67 percent of respondents watched Tuesday’s presidential debate.
Fifty-two percent of respondents said Harris won the debate. Twenty-nine percent said Trump won.
Although Alaska is a predominantly red state in presidential elections, the state is known for its independent character.
Republican Sen. Lisa Murkowski, who opposes Trump, won re-election in 2020 despite Trump supporting her opponent.
Democrat Mary Peltola won the 2022 midterm election and then a full term in the state’s ranked-choice election.
