Shocking moment when a one-legged Arizona man and his dog are attacked by 1,000 deadly bees

An Arizona man and his dog are recovering after being stung hundreds of times by a swarm of 1,000 deadly bees.

The ordeal on Saturday night only ended when they were hosed down by firefighters in their neighborhood.

John Fischer, 60, who lost one of his legs to an infection about eight years ago, was sitting in his wheelchair exercise bike, with his dog Pippin by his side, when they were attacked.

Surveillance video obtained by Arizona family showed the poignant moment the bugs went after the pair, causing Fischer to tip over in his chair as he crawled as he tried to escape.

Later, as he shook out his clothes of the day in front of cameras, dozens of bees poured out. One was still alive, but Fischer wheeled his wheelchair over it – in a moment of apparent retaliation.

Fischer was left with stitches on his arms, eyes, mouth, ears, legs and back, as well as scrapes from crawling on the floor. He was released from hospital on Monday and is recovering at home with his dog.

Fischer told Arizona Family that he had “never experienced anything like it.”

“I had been stung many times before, but nothing where it was more than 10 or 15 stings,” Fischer said, recalling the attack.

“There was a part of me that wanted to panic, and there was a part of me that wanted to panic. And I knew, from past experience, that you will lose it there. And you can’t control it anymore. You’re in more danger there,” he added.

Fischer was walking in his wheelchair in Florence, Arizona, when he said he felt what he thought was a fly and swatted it away.

“Before I knew it, there were bees all over me and all over the dog,” Fischer said.

“I tried to cross the street but I can’t see because they go to my eyes and they’re all over my face.”

He was able to release Pippin, who was on a leash from his wheelchair, and the dog ran to Fischer’s neighbor.

But the chair tipped over and Fischer tried to escape on his hands and knees.

“I crawled my way for a while to try and get far away from where they were, but of course they just followed me,” he said.

Firefighters showed up to help Fischer, but were seen on video fleeing the swarm of bees. Moments later, they returned and rinsed off Fischer.

He was taken to hospital, where Fischer said doctors told him he had been stung more than 250 times by the “killer bees.”

He said Pippin had been stabbed more than 50 times and has since been released by an animal hospital, but is still in bad shape.

“He’s sick,” Fischer said. ‘We’re trying to get him to drink. He is very sore, and what I can see is that he is quite lethargic. We’ll give him Benadryl too, so that’ll knock him out.”

He started one GoFundMe to raise money to help with the dog’s vet costs.
