Shocking moment delivery man falls down an empty elevator shaft and shatters his spine while delivering food to a building under construction
This is the shocking moment a delivery driver plummets down an empty lift shaft while delivering food to a building under construction, leaving him with a broken spine.
CCTV footage captured the moment the man, known only as Ke, walked into the building in Wenzhou, China, on the evening of March 12.
Equipped with a winter coat and a motorcycle helmet, he seemingly doesn’t notice the gigantic pitfall before him.
The delivery person walks through the hallway with two carrier bags of food and appears to be in a hurry to deliver the meal.
In a heartbreaking moment, Ke’s foot slides across solid ground and straight into empty space, sending him plummeting into the abyss.
Delivery man Ke was working in Wenzhou, China, when he entered a building under construction
The man was captured on CCTV stepping into the large gap between floors, apparently not realizing the hole was there
He fell from the third floor to the second and suffered serious spinal injuries as a result of the fall
He disappears completely from view as he falls through the hole onto the floor below him, still clinging to his supplies.
Speaking to local media on Saturday, Ke said the incident took place in a factory building where lighting in the corridor was poor.
He accidentally stepped into the elevator shaft and fell from the third floor to the second floor, sustaining serious spinal injuries.
Ke said: ‘There were no barriers around, so when I stepped on them I fell down. My lumbar spine was injured and my bones were shattered.”
He was then taken to hospital, where he underwent surgery and is currently recovering.
Local police also confirmed the incident but did not say whether the factory will face legal consequences if the danger area is not properly demarcated.
The incident comes after a man faced a similar situation in 2017.
A 37-year-old delivery worker suffered serious brain injuries after falling into an elevator shaft in Shenzhen, southeastern China.
The man was also found to have cuts and wounds all over his body, leaving him dependent on a ventilator to breathe.
And in 2016, two warehouse workers fell down an elevator shaft while riding an out-of-control cart.
According to local reports, they were unable to stop their vehicle because the floor was too slippery.
The pair reportedly suffered minor injuries
