Footage shows the two officers entering the building after reports of a burglary by Robinson's cousin.

One of them is seen knocking on the door while the other waits behind him.

Robinson is seen opening the door and the officer is heard saying, “Hey sir,” before the retiree waves a gun.

He then points it at the police and tries to approach them before the officers shoot him and he falls to the ground.

Both officers are seen on the ground and one shouts 'S***', while the other shouts: 'Oh my God! Shots fired, shots fired.”

They both tested negative for alcohol after the incident, and it was the first time either of them had been involved in a shooting.

The gun Robinson had was a Smith & Wesson .38 caliber revolver loaded with five bullets, and it was illegal to possess.

His neighbor Norma Martinez, 70, said her son let the two officers into the building.

“We hear, 'Boom boom boom!'” she said to the Daily news from New York at the time.

'I heard them like fireworks. I don't know what happened here, but why would you call the police about a robbery and answer the door with a gun?'

She described Robinson as an older man with health problems. “That old man couldn't even walk,” she added.

'He had to use a stick everywhere. But he did everything himself, shopping and doing the laundry… One thing I know for sure: that old man didn't deserve to die.'

John Chell, chief of police for the NYPD, said earlier: “They were very upset, and they were a little bit shocked that they got into this situation.

'A life and death situation at a distance of one meter… They were sad, and they are human beings. That's the job they've taken on.”

The New York Attorney General's Office of Special Investigation has initiated an investigation into the fatal shooting, as required by law.

Robinson's death sparked a protest organized by the New York Community Action Project, and they called for the firing of the officers involved.
