Shocking moment 77-year-old woman’s carer steals cash from her purse is captured on hidden camera

EXCLUSIVE: Shocking moment when caregiver 77-year-old woman steals money from her purse, caught on hidden camera

  • The pensioner’s daughter revealed that £40 had been taken from the purse

This is the shocking moment when a caretaker of a retiree is caught stealing money from her wallet.

The footage was recorded by the retiree’s daughter who placed a hidden camera in her frail mother’s bedroom after money started disappearing.

The daughter, who did not want to be named, said she was “stupid” after seeing the images recorded last Friday.

In it, the caretaker, dressed in blue overalls, can be seen prowling around the pensioner’s bedroom and then lifting what appears to be a leather bag. After opening it, she is caught on camera taking money out of it.

The pensioner’s daughter revealed that £40 had been taken from the purse and that she had been forced to install a secret camera following previous incidents where a total of around £300 was taken from her mother’s Plymouth home.

She said: ‘Money had been missing for some time, but we weren’t quite sure who took it. My mother depends on caregivers for survival and has several of them at her house every day.

‘So I put a camera in the bedroom and was shocked when I saw the video, which was recorded last Friday. Although I always suspected this caretaker, I couldn’t quite believe what I saw. It’s a disgusting thing to do and this caretaker is the lowest of the low, she should be ashamed of herself.’

After seeing the footage, the woman revealed that she confronted the carer at her home and the stolen £40 was returned by her.

She added: “The caretaker was very embarrassed and apologised, but that’s not good enough. She should be prosecuted for what she did and never be allowed to work as a carer again.”

The case has been reported to Devon and Cornwall Police.

The woman said: ‘My mother is 77 years old and needs a lot of help. If she can’t trust her caretakers, who can she trust?

“My concern is that things like this are happening all over the country because there are a lot of older, frail people who depend on their carers and give them full access to their homes. We were lucky this time, but how much of this goes unreported?’
