‘Our Professional Standards Department is assessing the officers’ body-worn video and a referral will be made to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC), as is normal in these circumstances.’
During the video, the teen boy’s mother can also be heard hysterically in the background shouting “what the hell did you do to my son?”
She adds, “Look at his asthma, his asthma, look, he can’t breathe, he’s a child.”
An officer shouted back to onlookers that the boy had been arrested and warned others to stand back.
He then countered their concerns with, “I don’t care, I don’t care.”
The footage has been viewed thousands of times after being uploaded by the online blog Birmz is Grime.
Internet users were divided over police tactics. One person wrote: ‘That’s a bit heavy-handed to say the least considering he’s just a kid.’
Another added: ‘This boy posed no threat at all and had no weapon to justify this behavior by the police.’
Another added: “If you can’t deal with a 14 year old boy in school uniform who isn’t a threat to his life and have to taser him while he’s with another police officer you guys probably shouldn’t be Bobby.”
However, one person added: ‘Brilliant work by the police. Surrounded by a violent, aggressive crowd. Very well handled.’
And another commented: ‘There should be a legitimate reason to restrain him. Two officers with a group of people who are given a challenge. They need to remove the challenge before they end up outnumbered on the floor.”
