A man has been charged with murder after police discovered the mummified remains of a man believed to have been held in a home for more than a year.

The body of Tomislav Nemes, 69, was found by police on April 17 during a welfare check at his $3 million home in the Gold Coast suburb of Benowa.

It is clear that he had been dead for over twelve months before the gruesome discovery was made.

Police arrested a man, 48, and charged him with murder on Tuesday.

The welfare check was prompted by Mr Nemes’ relatives, who called the police and expressed concern for his welfare.

Dramatic footage showed officers entering the building to check on the 69-year-old.

Relatives told officers they could not reach him at home.

His relatives had flown from Canberra to see him just three days before police carried out the welfare check.

Mr Nemes and his family had moved from the ACT to the Gold Coast in 2018.

He lived in his house with his wife, 70, and stepson, 48.

The couple lived in the house while Mr Nemes’s remains decomposed. They did not disclose his death to his family or the police.

Friends and family of Mr Nemes told detectives they lost contact with him years ago.

Detectives have released footage from the April 17 welfare check.

He sees officers climbing over a fence and approaching the back door of the property.

One of the officers knocks on the screen door of the house.

A woman comes to the door to speak to the police before they enter the premises.

The woman and a man can be seen on video as officers check the house.

Police have urged the public to come forward if they have any information about the welfare check carried out on April 17.

They have also asked relatives and friends of Mr Nemes to contact police if they visited his home in recent years.

The man charged with the alleged murder of Mr Nemes was brought before Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.
