New details emerge about accident at Oran Park school in Sydney

Shocking new details have emerged about a horrific accident at a primary school in Sydney’s south-west on Wednesday afternoon that left 10 children injured.

Several students and one adult were injured after a lighting installation fell on them while the school was holding an end of year performance at Barramurra Public School in Oran Park.

Yesterday around noon, several ambulances were sent to the school because the staff urgently wanted to call the parents.

Millie, an eight-year-old pupil at the school, told reporters she was performing on stage when she “suddenly heard a big bang”.

“It just fell straight down… because someone was moving it back and forth and bumping it,” she said 7News.

“I looked back and my friends looked back because it scared me,” she said. “We were too close together and I cried because of it.

‘I was shocked because I thought my friends were close by and that my friend would get hurt because it (light) was so big.’

She added that she was “scared because… when my girlfriend came down they saw the ambulances and said, ‘I’m very scared now.'”

“The teachers told us to get out quickly and go upstairs (to our classrooms).”

Her mother, who did not want to be named, told the Daily Telegraph that she arrived at the school around noon on Wednesday to see Millie perform and saw that there were several ambulances parked in front of the door.

“I didn’t know anything until I got here,” she said. “Nobody was notified. Nobody knew.”

A young boy named Kayden said: ‘We were doing a demonstration and a light fell on a child and a few people got hurt.’

“A little girl was hurt really bad. She was bleeding, but she’s OK,” he said.

Veronica, a grandmother who flew in to see her granddaughter perform at school, called the situation “terrifying.”

The first thing you think is, “How is my grandchild?”

A NSW Ambulance Service spokesman said they were called to the school at around 12pm, with video footage showing at least one child being wheeled out on a stretcher.

“Paramedics treated multiple patients at the scene, most of whom were children, as well as one adult,” he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘They were treated for minor injuries. One child was taken to Campbelltown Hospital and two children were taken to Westmead Children’s Hospital.

“They are all in stable condition, with minor injuries.”

A spokesperson for the New South Wales Department of Education said on Thursday afternoon that “all children were discharged from hospital on Wednesday evening”.

He added that “the investigation into what happened is ongoing and SafeWork continues to investigate the incident.”

Performances that were to take place at school have been cancelled.
