Shock as the boss of Fortescue Metals Group – Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest’s mining giant – is leaving after just six months

  • Fiona Hick, CEO of Fortescue Metals Group, resigns
  • Executive lasted less than six months in the role
  • Her departure follows a string of senior executives

The CEO of Andrew ‘Twiggy’ Forrest’s Fortescue Metals Group has left the mining giant after just six months.

Fiona Hick, along with the company’s board of directors, has made a “joint decision” to leave the company, FMG said in a statement released Monday.

It comes after Forrest celebrated the company’s 20th anniversary on Saturday at a party attended by the country’s political and media elite in the Pilbara, in western Western Australia’s northwest.

FMG stressed that Ms Hick’s departure was “both amicable and mutual”.

“We sincerely wish her the best for her future,” the company said in a statement The Sydney Morning Herald.

“We thank Fiona for her valuable efforts since she joined Fortescue just under six months ago and wish her all the best in her future pursuits.”

The announcement came just hours after Fortescue released its annual financial results Monday morning, in which it reported net income of $4.8 billion for the year.

That figure was 23 percent below the $6.2 billion the company posted last fiscal year The Australian.

The departure of Ms. Hick, who held the position less than six months after joining the company in February, follows a two-year period of turmoil in which several Fortescue executives left the company.

They include Felicity Gooding, the long-term director of the Forrest family, who left the company in July, CFO Ian Wells and former Reserve Bank deputy governor Guy Debelle.

Ms. Hick will be replaced by Chief Operating Officer Dino Otranto.
