Shia LaBeouf stars alongside Trevor Jackson from filmmaker Jon Amiel in the police thriller Mace

Shia LaBeouf will star alongside Trevor Jackson in an upcoming cop thriller titled Mace.

The 36-year-old actor plays the role of a seasoned New Jersey cop named Mace in the film, which is currently previewing at the Cannes Film Festival. deadline reported Wednesday.

The Los Angeles native will collaborate with filmmaker Jon Amiel on the film, which is written by David Chisholm.

LaBeouf’s Mace character is described as “dangerous and corrupt” in a producers synopsis, while Jackson’s character Virgil Woods is characterized as “a young rookie who believes he can change the system that nurtures cops like Mace from the inside out.”

The film, which is “inspired by the recent racial injustice on the streets of America,” shows Woods taking on his overbearing colleague.

Myriad Pictures exec Kirk D’Amico said filmmakers were thrilled to have the Transformers star head up the cast of the crime drama, which “explores the underbelly of a police station in modern-day New Jersey.”

Producer Lawrence Steven Meyers called the project “an irresistible creative coup” with LaBeouf and Jackson working with Amiel on a “terrific screenplay.”

Meyers added, “We are very pleased to have put together such a package.”

Production will begin in New Jersey later this year, the outlet reported.

The actor plays a veteran New Jersey police officer named Mace in the movie, which is currently previewing at the Cannes Film Festival.

Mace is one of many prominent projects LaBeouf has lined up in the near future, as he recently wrapped production on the biographical drama Padre Pio.

LaBeouf plays the titular role of Roman Catholic saint Padre Pio in his younger days in the Abel Ferrara-directed film.

In addition to Ferrara, LaBeouf is working with other iconic creatives on the upcoming film Assassination, directed by David Mamet; and Francis Ford Coppola’s Megalopolis.
