Sherlock creator Steven Moffat says he would start writing the show’s fifth season if Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman team up.

Steven Moffat, co-creator and showrunner of the Emmy-winning series Sherlock, said he would start writing the show’s fifth season if stars Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman committed to returning.

Moffat, 61, in an appearance on the BBC Today program on Monday, said he would “start writing tomorrow” if the actors, who played Sherlock Holmes and Dr Watson in the celebrated series, committed to another season of the Program.

“They’re onto bigger and better things, but, Martin and Benedict, ‘Will you please come back?'” Moffat said, according to Term.

Following the conclusion of Sherlock, both have been seen in high-profile projects in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, with Cumberbatch playing Doctor Strange, while Martin appears in the Black Panther movies as the Everett K. Ross character.

In the interview, Moffat promoted his West End play The Unfriend and said he and his collaborators had “just started talking about” the second series of their hit BBC/Netflix miniseries Inside Man.

Moffat said the show, which features Stanley Tucci and David Tennant, “performed quite well” on “enthusiastic nod charts” that measure public opinion.

Moffat said of tabulations: ‘You don’t get a [ratings] issue the next day now you get a breakdown of the audience a month later.’
