ORLANDO, Florida — A fight and a “popping” sound at Disney World’s Magic Kingdom park sparked unrest among visitors, with rumors of an active shooter quickly debunked by the county sheriff’s office.
The Orange County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that there was no active shooter Thursday evening in the park.
The sheriff’s office posted the following on social media: “There is NO active shooter at Walt Disney World’s Magic Kingdom. A fight ensued and a “popping” sound was heard which we believe was a balloon. Guests began running and this started the rumor of an active shooter. There is NO active shooter.”
No one has been arrested, an office spokesman said Friday.
Visitors to the park reported people running and children crying in the chaos.
A Disney World spokesperson released a statement thanking the sheriff’s office for the quick response and saying normal operations were returning to the park.
