Sheridan Smith reveals whether she wants Gavin and Stacey to return as she admits ‘so many shows overdo it’

Sheridan Smith has revealed whether she wants Gavin and Stacey to return following fan speculation about the show returning to screens for a new special.

The actress, 42, spoke about the possibility of a reboot of the hit sitcom, four years after the comedy returned for a one-off Christmas special.

Speaking to Jason King and Kelly Brook on Heart Breakfast, Sheridan said she doesn't know if the show will return, but she thinks “so many shows are overdoing it.”

Sheridan – who played Rudi, the sister of James Corden's character Smithy – suggested the show would not return, despite fans 'all wanting' the star cast to return.

During her radio appearance, she said, “I have no idea if they're going to do more or not, I really don't know.”

To which host JK replied, “I'm sure I saw something that there wouldn't be.”

And Sheridan added: “But I think what they've done is genius, they've left it at a high level, haven't they, so many shows overdo it, because we all want more, we all want more Gavin & Stacey.”

Her comments come after star Joanna Page crushed fans' hopes for a Gavin and Stacey comeback, saying it's unlikely the legendary sitcom will ever return.

Fans were hoping that co-writer and star James Corden returning to Britain after his eight-year stint as host of The Late Late Show in the US would boost the chances of making another Christmas special.

And after James, 45, met co-creator Ruth Jones, 57, in London's Soho earlier this month, speculation gained momentum.

But Joanna, 46, who played Stacey in the sitcom, says the comedy's chances of returning are slim as it was left on the ultimate cliffhanger during its last outing in 2019 when Nessa, played by Ruth, proposed to James' character Smithy asked. never gave her an answer.

Speaking exclusively to MailOnline, Joanna said: 'I can't see them ever doing it again because it was nice to leave it on a cliffhanger because it's up to the viewer to imagine what would have happened. So I imagine that's how they end up with it.'

Despite her doubts, Joanna still harbors hopes of reprising her character alongside her co-stars, including on-screen husband Mathew Horne, plus Larry Lamb, Alison Steadman, Rob Brydon, as well as James and Ruth.

She said: “I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get a call, and I wouldn't be surprised if I did.

“But all I can say is, if they're going to do another one, I hope it's soon because we're all getting so old. I don't want to see Stacey get that much older.

'And if there is a comeback, I will find out at the same time as the audience, because I am not told anything.'

She added: “Gavin and Stacey's kids would be teenagers now so that would be quite funny to see.”

Reflecting on her time on the sitcom, which first aired in 2007, Joanna describes how much life has changed since the debut episode, when Gavin and Stacey met on a blind date – having never seen each other before.

She said: 'If you did it today it would be completely different.

“It all started with a phone call between Gavin and Stacey, but now that everything would have been done via email or a Zoom call, you certainly weren't sitting there on the phone.

'There was also smoking in nightclubs. It's so funny, it wasn't that long ago, but life has changed so much.'
