Four people have died after a car collided with a ute near the Victorian country town of Shepparton.

The accident occurred around 4:45 p.m. Wednesday afternoon and the driver of the car was taken to hospital in serious condition, while the driver of the ute suffered minor injuries.

Traffic was stopped at the site, an intersection in Pine Lodge, east of Shepparton, as emergency crews attended the scene.

The driver of the ute remained at the scene to help emergency teams.

Detectives from the Major Collision Investigation Unit are being flown in from Melbourne to investigate the scene and determine the cause of the crash.
