Sheffield Wednesday star Lee Gregory has recovered his missing face mask from a fan who found it on the pitch following the team’s dramatic play-off victory against Peterborough on Thursday.

The Owls went into Thursday’s semi-final trailing 4-0 from the first game, but somehow turned the tie around to win on penalties after a 5-1 win on the night.

Gregory, who scored the second goal of the game, played with a face mask after a recent injury he suffered in training, but lost the protective piece of equipment when fans poured onto the field after the shootout victory. This led to the club issuing an urgent appeal to supporters to help them find it for their play-off final.

‘Can you help!?’ they posted on Twitter on Sunday.

“In the wake of our stunning comeback win on Thursday, Lee Gregory’s mask is missing!

He lost the facemask as the players celebrated their penalty shootout victory, but it has now been returned by a fan

‘The custom-made protective cover was at the dugout. Due to a short lead time, we are unable to replace in time for next week. Any idea where it could be!?’

Just five minutes later, they received a response from a fan confirming that his father had found the mask on the field.

‘Yes, my father picked him up after the game! Dm me, I’ll get it to him before Monday!’ he wrote alongside a photo of the mask.

The grateful League One club responded by posting a photo of a Sheffield Wednesday shirt signed by Gregory alongside the caption: ‘A short road trip later for admin.’

Gregory has been a key player for Sheffield Wednesday this season, scoring 10 goals during the regular season before adding Thursday to his tally.

He now looks poised to take the lead in the final at Wembley on May 29 after recovering his facemask, with Sheffield Wednesday facing Barnsley in an all-Yorkshire affair for the chance to play in the Championship next season.
