Maybe he has a problem again. It appeared to hit a hand, and that probably just barely kept the ball in play, before the ball was played to Longstaff by Anthony Gordon to bury the ball for Newcastle’s 1-0 lead.

The Blades are certainly going for this. Souza hits a shot from about 25 yards out, which stings Pope’s hands, but no real problems for the Magpies yet.

It was a fairly even match and the Blades had their chances both before and after Barnes got injured, but I wonder how much things will change as the game progresses.

The ball falls to Thomas at the far post, an excellent ball, but he is in a difficult position and he shoots it wide of the post. A great opportunity for the Blades there.

After this afternoon’s games at 2 p.m., Newcastle is in twelfth place with six points. Three points today would see them rocket to eighth place, above Manchester United.

The Blades are in 18th place with one point, just one ahead of their promoted sides Luton Town and Burnley on goal difference. With a point today they won’t beat Bournemouth to three points, but a win today and they escape the drop zone…

After last week’s win against Brentford and their draw in Milan on Tuesday, this is the team selected in the hope that Newcastle United will take three points in Sheffield this afternoon. There are four changes from the AC Milan draw, with Wilson, Anderson, Almiron and Barnes coming into the team.

It has been a tough week for Sheffield United, with the death of Maddy Cusack, a women’s midfielder who also worked in marketing for the men’s team.

They are still looking for their first win since their promotion back to the Premier League, and this is the eleventh win that Paul Heckingbottom has ordered to take on the Magpies.
