Mendes addressed this topic during his concert amid his new song titled The Mountain, in which he discusses long-standing speculation about his sexuality, with lyrics such as, “You can say I like girls or boys / Whatever suits you.”
During his concert on Monday, he told the audience: “Since I was very young, there has been something about my sexuality, and people have been talking about it for so long.
“I think it’s a bit weird, because I think sexuality is such a beautifully complex thing, and it’s so hard to put into boxes.”
He continued, “It always felt like an intrusion into something very personal to me, something I was figuring out within myself, something I had yet to discover and have yet to discover.
“The real truth about my life and my sexuality is that, man, I’m figuring it out just like everyone else. Sometimes I don’t really know, and other times I do. And it feels very scary because we live in a society that has a lot to say about that.’
Mendes said that by speaking publicly about the speculation, he was trying to “really be brave” and “just allow [himself] being human and feeling things – and that’s all I want to say about that for now.’
He told iHeartPodcasts’ On purpose with Jay Shetty On September 30, the public breakup after the years-long romance with Cabello was ‘brutal’ for both parties.

Mendes said he and his ex-girlfriend Cabello had taken steps to “protect each other and themselves,” noting that he had begun to step away from social media because “it’s honestly too damaging to the actual relationship itself .’
Mendes added, “This isn’t a movie — this is real life — this is real love, and love is confusing and hard and goes through dips, through lulls, through lulls.”
