Sharp glad to knock out ‘disrespectful’ Wrexham after helping Sheffield United book Tottenham tie

Sheffield United striker Billy Sharp has accused Wrexham of being disrespectful ahead of the FA Cup fourth round replay in which the Hollywood-owned National League club missed out on a blockbuster tie with the Tottenham.

The Blades needed two stoppage-time goals to get past Wrexham, who are owned by Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney, as Sharp and Sander Berge ensured they would be the ones to enjoy the glamorous draw against Antonio Conte, Harry Kane and the like after a 3 -1 win.

The non-league team dreamed of a happy ending for much of the night as Paul Mullin’s controversial penalty canceled out Anel Ahmedhodzic’s opener before the Blades rewrote the script.

Sharp said that the Welsh side acted as if they were done before the match and that he was “glad” to remove them.

“I think they’ve been disrespectful to some things before the game thinking they were done,” Sharp said. ‘I’m glad I beat them.

“They are doing well in their league and we are doing well in our league, he was not happy with some of his players tonight. That’s it now, we’ve got one on them tonight, good luck to them for the promotion, we put it to sleep now.

“He wasn’t happy with some of his players and I’m a bit frustrated at the end, I should have put the game to bed before doing it, but it’s one of those things.”

“I was not happy with the way they have been as a club before the game, looking at Spurs. They haven’t even beaten us. We are an honest group of guys and we want to go as far as possible in this competition. If we’re beaten in the next round well enough, we’ll try.’

Given that the opener at the Racecourse Ground was emotional and finished 3-3, it was always going to be hard for the sequel to live up to the original, but it certainly had drama.

Mullin, who later missed a second penalty, was clearly outside the penalty area when Ahmedhodzic’s foul began for the penalty he scored, although it continued to the edge of the box.

The Blades were denied what appeared to be a clear penalty of their own late on with Sharp saying referee Leigh Doughty was “helping” them.

The striker added on ITV4: “I think they thought we were going to capsize when they came back and I think the referee helped them all night as well.”

‘I don’t think I’ve fouled myself all night. Yes, it’s one of those things, I probably lost my mind a bit, but I have a smile on my face because we are in the next round of the cup and the guys deserve it.

Sharp didn’t save his conversation just for the TV cameras, as he also had words with the Wrexham players and staff in the tunnel.

Wrexham boss Phil Parkinson was disappointed with the response from the full-time veteran.

“To be honest, I’m a little disappointed in Billy, some of the things he was screaming at the end of the tunnel,” Parkinson said.

‘Well done Bill, you’re a fantastic player, but I thought it was disrespectful after the game. I think the way the players celebrated and the crowd and staff was just a taste of how hard we pushed them and they were relieved to get through.

‘The message to Billy is: You’re better than that, you really are. My players are humble people and a great credit to the football club.’

Wrexham, whose journey under the A-list players has captured the country’s imagination, will now be able to focus on returning to the Football League as they find themselves three points off the top of the National League with two games in hand.

‘We have taken a very, very good team to the end. We missed a penalty and I think if it had gone in we would have won the game,” added Parkinson.

“During this cup run we have shown everyone who we are as a football club and the spirit of Wrexham and how strong it is. We said we wanted the cup run to enhance the league campaign and I really feel that it did.”
