The terrifying moment when three spearfishermen were chased by a shark on a popular beach was captured by a drone camera.

Footage shows the gray nurse shark moving right past swimmers and towards three men in black wetsuits on a beach near Forster on the NSW north coast on Sunday.

Lifeguards sounded the alarm by blowing a whistle to warn beachgoers.

Moments later, panicked swimmers were seen running out of the water, but the spearmen were stranded near rocks and had no clear path to escape.

Drone cameraman Emily Howman said she felt helpless because she couldn’t warn the fishermen.

“I can’t do anything with my drone,” she told Nine News.

“I couldn’t even warn them.”

“There’s no audio, so I was terrified something bad would happen and all I’d be able to do was watch.”

The predator swims right under the fishermen, who seemed oblivious to its presence.

They eventually see the shark after it slides past and a man can be seen splashing as he tries to flee.

The men frantically swim back to shore.

One of the fishermen loses a flipper during the chaos.

He bravely dives back into the ocean to retrieve it as the shark circles the rocks.

Luckily for the men, it didn’t seem that the shark was interested in them when it eventually swam away.
