During her emotional interview on the TODAY show with host Hoda Kotb, Shania opened up about the horrific child sexual abuse she suffered at the hands of her stepfather.

The musical artist first claimed that her stepfather Jerry Twain had mistreated her in 2018.

Shania did not know her biological father. Her stepfather Jerry and her mother Sharon died in a car accident in 1987.

On Thursday, Shania opened up about the lasting trauma of the abuse and how being fondled by her stepfather as a child made her feel ashamed of her body.

She explained that she chose nude photography for her latest album cover as a way to deal with the horrible things her stepfather put her through as a child.

“It’s really about saying that I was abused as a child,” she said. “My stepfather fondled me all the way up and made me go around shirtless and I was already growing up. This awful, horrible desire to escape being in my own skin.

She continued: “It’s time to start loving myself in my own skin and really embrace that and not be ashamed or ashamed of it.” This is what I am.

‘Love who you are. I am my own royalty. I am my boss and I am responsible for the decisions I make, for what I say, for what I do. It’s a statement of self-confidence that I’ve become more of in recent years.

The conversation then shifted to talking about how Shania grew up in a violent home in her documentary Not Just a Girl, which was released in July 2022.

The singer revealed that the abuse began when she was around 10 years old.

She explained: ‘I feel like sexual abuse goes hand in hand with physical and psychological abuse when it’s someone you know. I learned to block it.

“Abusers need to manipulate you, either sooner or later, and what I told myself is, ‘Okay, there’s something wrong with this person and that person isn’t right.'”
