The family of a carpenter who was left in a coma after a horrific moped accident while on holiday in Bali say they will have to wait a long time before the extent of the damage is known.
Shane Ramsey, 30, was riding a moped in Seminyak on his way to watch the UFC with friends on Sunday when disaster struck.
The Perth trader crashed into a pole and was rushed to hospital, where he was treated for a fractured skull, a brain haemorrhage, blood in his lungs and severe brain damage.
He underwent emergency neurological surgery before being placed in a coma, where he is expected to remain for several days to allow the severe swelling in his brain to subside.
Doctors are still unsure how extensive the damage is.
Mr Ramsey was in Bali to be a groomsman at a friend’s wedding and had plans to buy a house when he returned home.
Ramsey’s mother Catherine was on a plane to Bali just hours after receiving the terrible news to join her son’s friends in hospital.
“They’ve been his friends since he was a kid, these guys haven’t left the hospital. They’re here 24/7, they’re an incredible group,” she said. 7News.

She added that her son “has done a lot of damage, there’s no doubt about that.”
A GoFundMe was launched on Monday to help pay Mr Ramsey’s medical bills and to get him to a medical evacuation home in the future, as he had no travel insurance.
“The surgery alone cost $53,000, each night in the hospital cost an additional $9,000,” wrote organizer Amyleigh Mitchell.
The fundraiser also aims to raise the $150,000 needed for an air ambulance to return Mr. Ramsey home if his condition improves.
His mother was overwhelmed by the support. Within 24 hours, over $70,000 had been raised.

“I’m his mother, I love him no matter what, but it’s amazing to hear that he’s so selfless,” Ramsey said.
“We’ve had incredible messages and donations from people we don’t even know. People even offering to fly out to see him.”
Mr. Ramsey had just completed a three-year apprenticeship and was looking to the future.
The carpenter’s former boss also took to Facebook on Monday to draw attention to the fundraiser.
He remembers running into his former student a few weeks ago, who described Mr. Ramsey as a great guy.
“You forget how f***ing fragile life can be (and) how quickly everything can change,” he wrote.
