Shane Mosley has revealed when he first met Jake Paul after Paul rehired him as a coach.
The YouTuber-turned-boxer brought Mosley back into his coaching squad ahead of his clash with former UFC star Nate Diaz in Dallas, Texas on Aug. 5.
Paul now stands 6-1 after losing the first fight of his fledgling career to British boxer Tommy Fury, a split-decision defeat in Saudi Arabia in February.
But the 26-year-old is eager to bounce back and has shown his resolve by rehiring boxing icon ‘Sugar’ to take over primary coaching duties from BJ Flores, who managed Paul against Fury.
And former three-weight world champion Mosley opened his first meeting with Paul at his Hollywood home.

He said, “I was one of the first trainers when he first fought (YouTuber) AnEsonGib in Miami. I thought when he came to practice, “wow this kid is really trying to be a fighter, he really wants to do this”. I heard a little about him through my kids, and we stopped by his house in Hollywood.
“He said he really likes boxing, we just came to his house and if you like boxing you know who I am. We started talking, I thought he was a really smart guy, he was about 21 years old.
“I said, ‘You like boxing, you should call me – I have a gym and I can show you how to be a real fighter’. Not just a YouTuber playing how to be a real fighter.
“I think I’ve convinced him, I’ve shown him how to be a professional fighter and I’d let him take to the streets and spar with real fighters. I had him in a real boxing environment, BJ Flores was my assistant. At the time I thought BJ Flores should be able to train him to the level of the YouTubers he was fighting against.”
Mosley will now train Paul full-time on the Caribbean island of Puerto Rico, while Flores will remain on Paul’s coaching team on an advisory basis.
Prior to his fight with Diaz, Paul said, “A lot of people my level probably would have just lost and gone or come back and easily fought someone or hid for a while.
‘I’m doubling down. This is what I must do and what I am destined to do in life. And so now they see, I think, that I’m committed, even after a loss.
“I’m not in it just for the money, I’m not in it just to win. I don’t just do it to knock people out. This is what I really love and what I’m passionate about.”
