Brisbane man Shane McGrath’s family make heartbreaking decision to turn off life support after an e-bike accident at Story Bridge

The family of a man seriously injured in an e-bike accident have made the difficult decision to switch off his life support, while friends posted a tribute to mark what would have been his 58th birthday.

Shane McGrath, 57, got off his bike as he crossed the Story Bridge at Kangaroo Point, in Brisbane’s south, on Sunday morning.

Police believe he was driving on a shared footpath when he lost control and crashed at around 3.10am.

Emergency services arrived on the scene and took him to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in a critical condition.

Mr McGrath was placed in an induced coma and his family made the heartbreaking decision to cut off his life support on Wednesday.

His friends paid tribute to him on what would have been his 58th birthday.

Peter Gabites paid tribute to his friend, with whom he used to ride.

“A sad day today with the passing of Shane McGrath,” he wrote on Facebook.

“One of the guys I toured centrally with when I had my big-off during Covid.

“I wish you could have continued our conversations about traveling around Romania together.

‘It would have been great to ride the Transfagarasan with you today. RIP mate!’

Peter Fuller also paid tribute to his lifelong friend on social media.

‘I had the great pleasure of having Shane as one of my best friends for the past 50 years and we have kept in close touch during that time,’ he said.

“I’ll miss you Shane, I love you buddy.”

Mr McGrath’s family and friends will gather at the Story Bridge Hotel on Thursday evening to celebrate his birthday and his life.
