Shakira will be honored with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV VMAs in September

Shakira is about to join an esteemed list of artists as the latest recipient of the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award at the 2023 MTV VMAs.

The Colombian pop sensation, 46 – who is rumored to be in a relationship with Louis Hamilton – will also be performing on the show and will be in the running for four Moon Person trophies: Artist of the Year, Best Collaboration for TQG with Karol G and Best Latin number for both TQG and Acróstico.

The 2023 VMAs will be broadcast live on September 12 from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

“Shakira is a true global force who continues to inspire and impact the masses with her unique musical prowess,” Bruce Gilmer, Paramount’s music host, said in a press release.

“She is a pioneer for women around the world and one of the first artists to lead the globalization of Latin music,” he continued.

“Her massive impact on the musical landscape will be long lasting as she continues to create and entertain at the highest level,” he concluded.

Taking the music scene by storm in the early 1990s, Shakira has released a series of hit and electric music videos over the years, including Hips Don’t Lie, Waka Waka (This Time for Africa), Chantajem La Bicicleta, La La La (Brazil). 2014) and Pero Fiel, all of which have more than a billion views on YouTube.

Past winners of the Video Vanguard Award include David Bowie, Madonna, Janet Jackson, Beyoncé, Justin Timberlake, Jennifer Lopez and Pink.

Shakira is the first South American artist to take home the Video Vanguard Award.

The When, Wherever singer won her first VMA for Oios Asi in the International Viewer’s Choice category.

Shakira took home her third Moon Person trophy for Best Choreography in 2006 for the Hips Don’t Lie video.

She won her most recent VMA in 2007 for her collaboration with Beyoncé in Beautiful Liar.

Demi Lovato, Karol G, Måneskin and Stray Kids will also perform at the VMAs, with more to be announced in the coming days.

Taylor Swift leads the nominations with eight for Best Video, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Visual Effects and Best Editing for Anti-Hero, as well as Artist of the Year.

SZA closely follows Swift with six nominations, while Doja Cat, Kim Petras, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, Olivia Rodrigo and Sam Smith each have five nominations, and BLACKPINK, Diddy and Shakira each have four nominations.

This year’s list of nominees also sets the record for the number of new nominees.

Ice Spice, GloRIlla, Petras and boygenius are among the 35 newcomers.
