The outlet reported that the U.S. Coast Guard rescued 17 people who jumped into Lahaina harbor as the fires overtook the city.

“There were no fire trucks at the time. I think the fire department was overwhelmed,” a business owner in Lahaina told CBS News.

Hawaii Governor Josh Green said it appears a “bomb” went off after about 1,700 buildings were destroyed by the fire.
