The central government, in response to a contempt petition, has informed the Lucknow bench of the Allahabad court that it has issued notices to actors Akshay Kumar, Shahrukh Khan and Ajay Devgn in connection with advertisements they make for gutka companies.

The Centre's counsel informed the Supreme Court on Friday that the same issue is also being heard by the Supreme Court and therefore the immediate petition should be dismissed.

After hearing the submission, the court fixed the hearing for May 9, 2024.

Rajesh Singh Chauhan had earlier directed the central government to decide on the representation of the petitioner, who had originally argued that action should be taken against the actors and dignitaries who received high-profile awards but promoted gutka companies.

The complaint was filed with the government on October 22, but no action was taken, the petitioner alleged.

Thereafter, the Supreme Court, after hearing the contempt petition, had issued a notice to the Cabinet Secretary of the Central Government.

On Friday, Deputy Solicitor General SB Pandey informed the Supreme Court that the Center had issued notices to Akshay Kumar, Shah Rukh Khan and Ajay Devgn.

The court was also told that Amitabh Bachchan had sent a legal notice to a gutka company, which was running his advertisement despite the fact that he had already canceled his contract with it.
