Sergio Aguero heaped praise on the manager of one of former club Manchester City’s biggest rivals as he said he would have loved to play under Jurgen Klopp.

The former Cityzen broke Merseyside hearts more than once during his relentlessly in-form spell in the Premier League between 2011 and 2021.

The 35-year-old – who was forced to retire prematurely after being diagnosed with a cardiac arrhythmia shortly after moving to Barcelona three years ago – memorably helped his former side claim their first Premier League title in his first season. to win four more titles, three of which came during Klopp’s reign at Anfield.

But despite spending most of his time in Manchester under messianic head coach Pep Guardiola, Aguero admitted that due to his particular playing style it would have been a ‘great experience’ to work under the German manager at some point in his career to play.

“Great manager,” Aguero said of Klopp Stake“Klopp has certainly taken Liverpool to the next level, making them a protagonist of the Premier League in recent years.

‘He has made them more aggressive, more intense in their playing style. New players have arrived and Jurgen has managed to adapt them to this attacking mentality.

‘He will be greatly missed in the Premier League, but he has made his choice and it is up to us to respect that.

‘Any good manager will teach you many valuable things. It would certainly have been a great experience to play under Klopp.”

The Reds manager announced his departure from the club in January after nine trophy-laden years ahead of the remainder of the season after saying he had ‘run out of energy’ in the role.

Liverpool will be keen to ensure that the manager who delivered the club’s first Premier League title is sent off in spectacular fashion, and that the team enjoys a thrilling season after a less stellar 2022-2023 campaign.

The side have already won silverware and stolen the Carabao Cup from Chelsea at Wembley deep into extra time in February, and continue to compete in the Europa League and the title race.

Liverpool currently sit second on goal difference alone behind leaders Arsenal, but ahead of the business end of the season the race for top spot remains incredibly tight, with Aguero’s old side in third place, just one point behind.

When Premier League action resumes this weekend, Liverpool will be watching with anticipation to see if Man City and Arsenal drop crucial points when the two teams face off at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.

The Merseyside club have a relatively easier encounter earlier today when they welcome Brighton to Anfield, with eighth-placed Seagulls having won just twice in their last five league matches.
