Serena Williams thanks Andy Murray for ‘speaking out for women’ in tribute

Serena Williams has thanked Andy Murray for “going above and beyond for women” in a social media tribute, congratulating him on his “incredible career” in tennis.

Murray, a three-time grand slam champion, is playing his final Wimbledon and was honoured at a ceremony on Centre Court on Thursday night. Murray and Williams played together in a mixed doubles match at the All-England Club in 2019 and the American also referred to Murray’s grumpy behaviour on court.

“Congratulations to Andy Murray on such an incredible career,” Williams said in a video on social media platform X. “I have to say I’ve always enjoyed watching you. One of the main reasons is that you were one of the few players who would be angrier than me on the pitch, which is difficult to do.

“But for me it was the most exciting thing to watch and I had the pleasure of playing mixed doubles with you guys, which was such a fantastic experience to do, at Wimbledon,” Williams added. “It was truly one of the highlights of my life.”

The 23-time Grand Slam champion added: “I’m so grateful to have had that experience and I also have a special place in my heart for you because you always stand up for women and everything that women deserve.”

Murray broke new ground by hiring Amélie Mauresmo as his coach in 2014, while regularly covering the women’s game. He also memorably corrected a reporter who had overlooked the achievements of American women’s players during a 2017 press conference – a moment that was included in the tribute montage played on Centre Court.

“You were the leader in that and the things you said about me and Venus, so many things about how inspiring we always were and what we meant to you, it really touched my heart,” Williams added.

“I will always be grateful for that, I will always be grateful for the support you have given me, the support you have given women and the excitement you have brought and continue to bring to tennis,” the 42-year-old continued.

“It was so exciting to watch you win Wimbledon and the US Open and those gold medals. I really enjoyed it. I’ve always been a fan, as you know, and I will always encourage and support you in whatever you decide to do.”
