Rahul Navin appointed as ED director

Rahul Navin, acting chief of the Enforcement Directorate (ED), was on Wednesday appointed full-time director of the federal anti-money laundering agency.

An order by the Appointments Committee of the Cabinet (ACC) said that the appointment of Navin, a 1993-batch officer of the Income Tax Department of the Indian Revenue Service (IRS), has been made “for a period of two years from the date on which he assumed charge of the post or till further orders, whichever is earlier”.

Navin, 57, joined the ED as Special Director in November 2019. He was appointed acting director of the ED after the term of his predecessor Sanjay Kumar Mishra ended on September 15 last year.

Navin is an expert in international tax matters. During his time as head of the European Affairs Department, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren were arrested in separate money laundering cases.

The ED investigates financial crimes under two criminal statutes: the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) and the Fugitive Economic Offenders Act (FEOA). In addition, the ED investigates the civil provisions of the Foreign Exchange Management Act (FEMA).
