According to an official order, senior civil servant Tuhin Kanta Pandey was appointed as the new finance minister on Saturday.
Pandey, a 1987 batch Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer who was part of the Odisha administration, is currently secretary, Department of Investment and Public Asset Management (Dipam).
The Cabinet Appointments Committee has approved the appointment of Pandey as Finance Minister, according to the order issued by the Human Resources Ministry.
The vacancy arose after TV Somanathan was appointed cabinet secretary last month.
According to the convention, the Chief Secretary of the Union Finance Ministry is designated as the Finance Minister.
