Jacinta Price has opened up about the heartbreak of losing her older brother to leukaemia when she was just three years old.

The Indigenous Senator shared a post to her social media on Monday to raise awareness about cancer affecting young kids as part of Childhood Cancer Awareness Month.

She revealed how the disease has personally impacted her life with her older brother, Leonard, tragically dying from cancer at the age of 10 while her nephew, Pipantji, is now in remission.

‘September is Childhood Cancer Awareness Month,’ Senator Price wrote.

‘The Kids’ Cancer Project supports groundbreaking medical research projects to develop better treatments and to find a cure for childhood cancer.’

The Country Liberal politician said that creating awareness about childhood cancer was important to her as it had ‘touched my life as well as those in my family’.

‘As a 3 year old I lost my brother when he was just 10 to childhood cancer.’

‘I’ve supported my nephew Pipantji (pictured with me) and his family as he has battled cancer from his newborn years up until more recently,’ she continued.

Senator Price revealed her nephew had been in remission for the past two-and-a-half years.

‘We are so grateful that he is living a healthier and more rewarding life as a lively 4 year old.’

As his mother always says, ‘He is our T21Warrior!’

Pipantji, who is now four-years-old, battled leukaemia before he turned two.

He was born with down syndrome and medical complications back in December 2017.

Senator Price launched a GoFundMe at the time to raise money for her nephew’s family that would go towards medical bills, travel expenses and other costs.

She has previously reflected on how the death of her brother from leukaemia personally affected her and her family in a piece she wrote for The West Australian back in 2016.

‘My brother and I were very close, and even being so young, I felt a great loss,’ she said.

‘I don’t remember my mother’s sadness but more my father’s. I think being a Warlpiri woman she had learned to maintain a brave face through such heartache.

‘After all, heartache was no stranger to my mother. Death was – as I learned from early on – a very significant part of life.’
