Selling Sunset’s Emma Hernan reveals the WORST mistakes homeowners make when putting their homes on the market

As it turns out, highballing is the easiest way to sabotage a home sale, according to Emma Hernan of Selling Sunset.
The Oppenheim Group broker was shocked by the “worst” mistake people make when they first list real estate: “Getting too high is the absolute worst thing a seller can do,” said 31-year-old Emma. Houses & Garden.
“I’ve seen it firsthand; you always get more by asking for less,” the estate agent continued.
“People often think they have to go higher because they want more, but no,” Emma stressed. “I tell my clients not to accept offers they don’t want, but if you go lower you always get more money.”

While many believe that raising the initial asking price will generate offers “closer to the price you want,” she acknowledged, “the problem is that a home stays on the market for too long.”
Emma went on to explain that as customers are ultimately forced to make “one price cut after another,” the listing will ultimately “sit in the market at a cost.”
Whereas by keeping the asking price low from the start, they probably would have received several offers in that time.
The reality TV star also shared insight into stylistic elements of interior design that she believes can make or break a home sale.
She states that the number one thing to avoid is “leaning too far into a trend or color palette.”
“You have to think about it this way: Just because it’s something you like or want doesn’t mean everyone wants it,” Emma explained.
Instead, homeowners should stick to “a more timeless and traditional decor that appeals to a wide range of buyers.”
And that’s something to keep in mind, even if the idea of selling your house seems a long way off for now, she added.

Emma insisted that potential homebuyers will be more receptive to interior designs that are “timeless and traditional.”
Because, when you decide to sell the house, you want a buyer to be interested in the house. You have to keep the house timeless and traditional.’
“That’s the greatest advice I can give.”
