Chris Sutton believes Nottingham Forest and their manager Steve Cooper will be ‘absolutely killed’ if the club sell star man Brennan Johnson to Tottenham.
Spurs are preparing to make a £50 million bid for the 22-year-old Wales international, who would rather sign for the north London club than other candidates Chelsea and West Ham.
Forest have already turned down a number of offers of up to £35 million from Brentford for Johnson and are likely to see their resolve tested before next week’s transfer deadline.
But Mailsport columnist and former Premier League striker Sutton fears Forest could be doing themselves more harm than good by now taking the money for a player who netted 10 goals and three assists last season.
“Well it will absolutely kill Nottingham Forest and Steve Cooper,” Sutton told Mail Sport’s It’s All Coming Up podcast.

“He can’t be in a hurry to get rid of Brennan Johnson, no matter how much money Nottingham Forest gets. I understand why Ange Postecoglou is taking Brennan Johnson’s place.
“I think we looked a little bit at the Tottenham team in the first few games. You can see the progress Postecoglou has made, but it’s not really his team.
“As such, he has inherited a big part of that squad and will want to bring in his own players who suit his style of play.
“It’s healthy, it’s been interesting, the front line he had there, and in terms of the different traits he likes on the other side of the front line.
“Some of them were really good athletes, that movement in the back, which he would use Brennan Johnson for outside the broad areas I think.
“(James) Maddison on the half turn, nutrition and Brennan Johnson, I think that would suit Tottenham’s style of play. He is young, versatile and can play in multiple positions.

“Forest still think they have a fight ahead of them in the Premier League, so losing arguably your best player, that’s a bit of a no-no, isn’t it?”
Mail Sport football editor Ian Ladyman concurred, saying Johnson’s loss would ‘rip the heart and soul out of Steve Cooper’s team’.
Forest opened their Premier League season with a 2-1 defeat at Arsenal, but bounced back to beat Sheffield United by the same scoreline on Friday night.
Cooper’s team will make the trip to Old Trafford on Saturday to take on Manchester United.
