Selena Gomez’s mom Mandy Teefey opens up having her daughter at just 16: ‘It’s like we grew up together’
Selena Gomez’s mother has opened up about having her daughter at 16, admitting they “grew up” together.
Mandy Teefey, 47, mother of Selena and her younger sister, Gracie, appeared as one of The Moms in Glamour’s Women of the Year issue.
Mandy, who is also the 31-year-old’s business partner, was joined by Donna Kelce, Tina Knowles and Maggie Baird as they shared what it takes to raise some of today’s most successful young people.
In the issue, Mandy opened up about her teenage pregnancy and admitted she had ‘no idea what to expect’ when she gave birth to Selena at the age of 16.
“It’s almost like we grew up together,” she said sweetly.

‘We joke that we have to be in retirement homes at the same time. The difference is only sixteen years.’
Mandy added that having Gracie, now 11, later in life was a very different experience than having Selena at 16.
“A blessing,” she assured. “But yes, very intimidating.”
Mandy added that she was careful to ensure she raised Selena with good morals and values as she grew up in the public eye.
“Then you have the added pressure of them being in the spotlight, and trying to grow and be themselves and go through what every other kid goes through, and they can’t do that without judgment,” she explained.
The proud mother reminisced about a time when she saw an opportunity to do just that.
“That’s one of my favorite stories,” she exclaimed.
“She got out of the trailer and there was an umbrella, and they were holding it for her, and then they brought her food and all that stuff, and I thought, ‘She can hold her own umbrella.’

“She needs to learn how to put her own gas in her car. She has to be human first.”
Selena and her mother seem to have a very close bond. She has collaborated with Gomez on the Netflix series 13 Reasons Why and co-founded Wondermind, a mental health startup.
Earlier this year, Mandy spoke out about the actress’ social media breaks.
She said Gomez ultimately decided how long each of her breaks would last, saying, “Whatever time Selena needs, she gives herself.”
The hitmaker’s mother also revealed that she often took short breaks from social media, although she regularly returned to her various outlets.
“I can go a week without looking at social media, and then I go there and try to catch up,” she admitted.
Teefey then advised her fans to take a break from social media every now and then in an effort to ground themselves in reality.
‘You feel more comfortable in your world and live in the moment. It’s so much calmer,” she said.
The artist’s mother then shared how she spent the mental health days with her daughter, who often spends time with her family after disconnecting from social media.
“We get together and plan a movie day; we cook food and just relax and hang out. Then we all fall asleep,” she said.
