Selena Gomez revealed she doesn’t sleep in her bedroom while attending the Wondermind Mental Fitness Summit on Thursday in honor of World Mental Health Day.
The Only Murders In The Building star, 32 – who recently sizzled while promoting her film Emilia Perez in New York – said her room was “associated” with “a very dark time.”
During the panel discussion, the actress reflected on her 2022 documentary titled My Mind & Me, in which she opened up about being diagnosed with her bipolar disorder, per AOL.
“I’m a little different from my mother because I spent too much time in my bedroom, so I don’t even sleep in my bedroom anymore because I associate it with such a very dark time.”
Gomez continued, “Being anxious is so debilitating sometimes, and yes, I didn’t want to leave my bed for years, and part of that was not doing the work.”

“And you have to believe in yourself to do the work that will actually make you a little enlightened.”
Also during the panel, Selena said, “I’m a very anxious person. It’s a bit like judgment day, and I think having a positive conversation with yourself, even though it sounds strange, really has an impact.”
“Like before I get out of the car, and there’ll be a lot of noises and stuff — if that’s the case, I’m not saying that’s every day — but I have to breathe.”
Gomez added, “And I have to say, ‘This is all a gift, and maybe I’m not in the mood for this.’ [but] Every time I see someone and end up making them laugh, [it] always makes my day no matter how I feel.”
While opening up about her mental health journey, the Wolves singer discussed having a tight-knit “inner circle.”
‘I don’t have many people in my life, [but] I know who my inner circle is. I need to talk things out.”
‘And I also have a therapist, but it’s also nice to have people around you who just listen to you.’
Selena further explained, “There’s a freedom in letting go of whatever it is that’s holding you down and that lump in your throat.”

Elsewhere during the panel, Gomez spoke about taking time off from social media, but said she “needed to stop trying to defend myself.”
“Because I shouldn’t apologize for being honest, for saying I’m no good, and that’s not a nice thing you said.”
The Rare Beauty founder added that her mother taught her “that the noise will be there all the time.”
“But it’s about finding that moment where I physically say, ‘No, I’m a good person, I’m kind, I work really hard and I’m grateful, and I love all the little things in life,’ and I need that reminder.”
However, Selena admitted, “I’m not going to lie, it hurts a little bit. I’m definitely not one of those people who can ignore it.’
‘I only speak for my generation, because it’s crazy how inhuman people can be with their words and things they would probably never say in person. It just hurts.’
Earlier this year in April, Gomez – who is currently dating Benny Blanco – attended the Time 100 Summit and said taking a break from social media had been the “most rewarding gift” to herself.
In January, Gomez announced she would be taking a break from Instagram.

At the time, she uploaded a movie starring boyfriend Benny Blanco with two younger children. In the text added at the bottom, she wrote: “I’ve been off social media for a while. I focus on what really matters.’
But a day after announcing she would be taking a break from social media, she returned to Instagram to promote a cooking video with Gordon Ramsey.
Also last Thursday, Gomez got emotional in an Instagram video when a young fan introduced her as someone who “leads generations with confidence, style and grace” and someone who inspires kids like her.
She also announced that 100% of sales from her makeup brand Rare Beauty at Sephora on World Mental Health Day would benefit her Rare Impact Fund.
Selena then reflected on her mental health, noting that she tends to isolate herself — which can be “scary.”
The star held back tears as she was introduced by a young fan in the clip, which she shared in her slideshow.

Gomez also recently reflected on her mental health in an interview, and she was asked what she does on a bad mental health day.

The actress, who was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2020, said she will reach out to friends and people she “trusts.”
‘Sometimes it can be scary to isolate myself when I’m not feeling well. I’m thinking all these thoughts. But when I’m around people who make me feel good and make me feel like I can say anything, it always helps me,” Selena said via Page six.
She also noted that she does talk to her therapist during these times when she’s feeling mentally down, but she “doesn’t want to call my therapist too often,” she said.
The star also said she enjoys talking to her younger sister Gracie, 11, because she’s “really sweet and innocent and it makes me feel very grounded.”
