Selena Gomez makes RARE remark on split from Justin Bieber as she reflects on channeling ‘heartbreak’ into writing her ‘best music’
Selena Gomez made a rare comment about her love life while reflecting on how to channel heartbreak into music charts, which has resonated with her legions of fans.
During an interview for the Twilio SIGNAL 2023 Conference earlier this week, the 31-year-old pop star thought about giving her her first number one on the Billboard Hot 100, Lose You to Love Me.
“When I went through a heartbreak, I immediately wrote my best music and wanted to be there for any woman or man or whoever, you know, going through that journey,” she said, referring to her split from Justin. Bieber.
The Rare Beauty founder and Canadian singer, 29, had an occasional romance between 2010 and 2018, before finally calling it quits just months before getting engaged to his current wife, Hailey Bieber.

She credited their divorce as forcing her to learn to “choose for herself and choose life again.”
The breakup inspired her 2020 hit song, Lose You to Love Me, with the star saying, “Everything was so public. I felt haunted by a past relationship that no one wanted to let go of. Then I just walked past it, and I wasn’t afraid anymore.
“I feel like I had to go through the worst heartbreak ever and then forget everything in no time at all, it was really confusing. But I just think it had to happen and in the end it was the best thing that ever happened to me.”
She added that she wrote the song in just 45 minutes and continued, “It’s about more than a love lost. I learn to choose for myself, to choose life, but I also hope that people can find grace and peace in that too.
“The song is about knowing that you have completely lost every part of who you are, only to rediscover yourself.
Selena and Justin were teenage sweethearts, but last split in 2018, months before he married Hailey in court.
The month after Justin married Hailey, Selena reportedly had a breakdown due to her lupus and entered treatment for her mental health.
During her last interview, Gomez shared that she was diagnosed with an autoimmune disease as a teenager.

“When I was diagnosed with lupus, I was about 16 or 17 years old. It was a very cruel process and I didn’t like it at all,” she recalls. “But a few years later I was able to visit a kid in the hospital, and they wouldn’t look at me until I said I have lupus, too.”
The Wolves singer continued: “And then I knew that happened to me because I could do that moment.”
Even talking about her kidney transplant, the actress said she went out of her way to see these experiences as moments to remind others that they are not alone.
“I’m a work in progress, and it’s only one day at a time,” she added.

In 2020, Gomez referred to herself as a “victim of certain abuse” in a past relationship during an interview. NPR.
