One user went to “X,” formerly Twitter sharing: “Wait. Is this how Americans vote? By dropping their ballot in some box on the street?’

Another commented: ‘How long have you been voting like this??? Have you not questioned this method until now? Moreover, there is no supervision? Who the hell thought this was a good idea?’

“I think this is wild because in Australia you have to come to a polling station set up in a primary school, get your name written down in a book and then they give you a ballot paper that you fill in in a box,” another responded.

The “drop boxes” are being placed in cities across the country to “provide voters with a safe and convenient way to return their ballot,” the U.S. Election Assistance Commission explains.

“A drop box is a secure, locked structure operated by election officials where voters can drop off their ballots from the time they receive them in the mail until the polls close on Election Day.”

The polls may be manned or unattended, and some may be permanent while others may be temporary.

‘Unmanned drop boxes are usually available 24 hours a day and permanently anchored. Staffed drop boxes are generally available during regular business hours and are monitored by trained employees during those hours,” the commission added.
