Despite saying at the time that the shame didn’t affect her, the star now reveals that she “lied” so other people wouldn’t feel the same pain.

Selena shares her story in a new episode of ‘Dear…’, which features a variety of acclaimed figures and leaders who share their story while receiving letters from people whose lives they have touched.
He looked back on his 2014 lupus diagnosis, a disease that occurs when your body’s immune system attacks its own tissues and organs.
Sharing that she didn’t feel any symptoms, the singer explained, “It was just my body fighting itself on the inside.” That was the most surreal part, because I never felt fatigue; I was young, I felt completely fine.
“So to hear from a doctor, ‘You could have had a stroke on stage, you could have died,’ was a lot. But I didn’t let it sink in; I didn’t want to process it.
Selena had a life-saving kidney transplant in 2017, with her best friend Francia Raisa donating her kidney.
She was then prescribed certain medications, which caused fluctuations in her weight and led to body shaming.
She continued: ‘My weight would fluctuate constantly because I would be taking certain medications. And obviously, people just followed. It was like they couldn’t wait to find something to take me down. I was shamed for gaining weight from my lupus.
Admitting that she lied about how to deal with shame, Selena shared that she would deflect her feelings to protect others who were also being body shamed.

When she would post about her body online, she would tell fans that negativity didn’t matter and wasn’t welcome.
But actually, she shared: ‘I lied. She would connect me to the internet and post a picture of me and say [the negative comments] It doesn’t matter, I’m not buying what you’re saying, the whole time I’m in the room posting that, crying, because no one deserves to hear those things.’
“I was posting these things saying it doesn’t bother me because I didn’t want it to upset other people who are experiencing the same thing: being ashamed of how they look, who they are, who they love.
‘I think it’s so unfair; I don’t think anyone deserves to feel less than,” he added.
