See Burning Man from SPACE: Incredible satellite photo shows the massive scale of the festival in Nevada’s Black Rock Desert
- ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission captured a satellite image of the festival
It is one of the most famous festivals in the world.
And now, incredible footage has shown what Burning Man looks like from space.
The festival took place from August 25 to September 2 and attracted 70,000 visitors to Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
On August 26, the second day of the festival, the European Space Agency’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission took a satellite image of the festival.
The dramatic photo shows the temporary settlement of campers and tents huddled together in the desert, with only one main road leading to the remote location.

ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission is based on a constellation of two identical satellites flying in the same orbit but 180° apart.
Together, these satellites cover the Earth’s entire land and coastal waters every five days.
One of the newest images shows the sandy area in the southwestern part of Nevada’s Black Rock Desert.
This is the location for Burning Man, a week-long art and self-expression festival featuring music, art installations, experimental and interactive sculptures, and art cars.

The main focus of the image is the semi-circle in the middle of the desert. This is a temporary settlement of campers and tents that are grouped together.
There is only one main road on which the 70,000 participants travel.
“There are very few roads in this area. They appear as straight lines in the image,” the caption explains.
On both sides of the desert you can see dark brown areas in the image.

“On either side of the white, sandy area, rugged mountain ranges are visible in brown,” the circle on the mountains explains.
The Black Rock Desert, like most of Nevada, is located in the Great Basin Desert.
This is the largest desert in the US, covering an arid area of over 500,000 square miles (1,270,000 square kilometers).
On September 5, 2024, a third satellite, called Sentinel-2C, was launched into orbit as part of the Sentinel-2 mission.
“Less than two weeks after launch, Sentinel-2C has delivered its first stunning images, showing that the satellite is not only performing as expected, but has even exceeded expectations,” ESA said.
