The mining sector in Western Australia has been rocked by two deaths in three days.

WorkSafe Mines has confirmed that it is investigating the latest tragedy, which took place at the Karlawinda gold mine in the remote northern region of Pilbara.

The fatality comes just two days after one was killed at the St Ives gold mine in the southeast corner of WA.

The tragedy in Karlawinda this morning involved an employee of contractor MACA.

WorkSafe inspectors and WA police have been called to the scene to investigate what happened.

MACA chief executive David Greig said support was being offered to the miner’s family and colleagues.

“Our thoughts are with our colleague’s family, friends and colleagues,” he said The West.

“We will support the families of our colleagues and our teams as we all work through this tragic event.”

Mine operator Capricorn Metals also expressed condolences to the family, saying the death had “shocked” everyone on the scene.

“Our deepest thoughts and condolences go out to the family, friends and colleagues of the MACA employee,” said Mark Clark, executive chairman of Capricorn.

Police have also been called in for the Pilbara incident.

WorkSafe WA Commissioner Darren Kavanagh told the Westralian that any work-related death is a tragedy.

He expressed his sincere condolences to the employee’s family, friends and colleagues.

The Karlawinda mine, which produced its first gold in June last year, employs about 250 employees and contractors.

On Wednesday, a contractor died in an incident at the St Ives mine.

A second contractor suffered minor injuries in the incident.

South African mining manager Gold Fields described the death as a “devastating loss” to the “close-knit team.”

The site in St Ives has been closed until an investigation by Worksafe and the police has concluded it is safe to reopen.

Gold Fields said it will cooperate fully with authorities.
