Teenage girl’s arm ripped off in ferocious shark attack – a day after a 14-year-old boy lost his leg in another mauling at the same Brazilian beach resort
- Two teenagers had to be amputated after separate shark attacks in Brazil
- Both attacks occurred within a mile of each other on the same beach
A shark attack off Piedade Beach in Brazil ripped off a 15-year-old girl’s arm.
Horror footage shows the moment when her bystanders pull Kaylane Timóteo Freitas onto the beach and place her on the ground with a bloodied rag covering the remains of her arm.
The teen’s arm was amputated at a nearby hospital and she is reportedly in stable condition.
The attack came just a day after a 14-year-old boy was attacked by a shark on the same beach, forcing his leg to be amputated.
Both attacks occurred within 500 meters of each other on Piedade Beach, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Pernambuco State, Brazil.
The 15-year-old girl is found in the water and brought to safety by a group of men
People on the beach rushed to get the girl out of the sea and put it down further down the beach
According to the authorities, a medical team visited the teenage girl around 1:20 p.m. on Monday.
She was carried off the beach by rescuers and taken to hospital by helicopter.
After undergoing an amputation, Kaylane is said to be in a stable condition in the hospital, where she is awake and able to answer questions.
Andréa Caribé, who lives in a building opposite the beach, said: ‘When I saw her, she was already covered with blankets and being taken away.
‘Even after that, people were still in the water. She [lifeguards] drew people out.’
Psychologist Andrea Caribe, who lives in a building overlooking the beach, said she was stunned to see people remain in the water after the attack.
She told local media: “She [the lifeguards] pull people out.”
Swimming has been banned on Piedade Beach since 2021 due to the high number of shark attacks.
The Greater Recife area is considered the most deadly shark attack site in the world.
The attack on Kaylane was the third in two weeks off Pernambuco.
On Sunday, March 5, a 14-year-old boy was left with his thigh exposed after a shark attack.
On February 20, a surfer was bitten by a shark at Praia Del Chifre in Olinda.
The authorities pointed out that the beach has been a restricted swimming area since 2021 due to the frequency of shark attacks.
There are 150 signs in the region warning of the risk of shark attacks and a state decree has been in effect since 1999.
City Hall said they will schedule a meeting with the State Shark Incident Monitoring Committee to decide whether to take new measures in the area.
Helpers put the girl on the ground before the water washes away a pool of blood
As a rule, most sharks are not dangerous to humans. Of the more than 300 species, only about a dozen have been implicated in attacks on humans, according to the national Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
Most unprovoked attacks are through great white sharks, tiger sharks and bull sharks.
The apparent increase in attacks is related to rising human populations around the coast and habitat destruction.
In 2022 there were 57 confirmed unprovoked cases worldwide, of which 41 were in the United States and only five were fatal.
