The Seattle Mariners have locked up another trump card for their pitching staff and signed a five-year contract with righthander Luis Castillo on Saturday.

Castillo was the big trade deadline takeover for the Mariners when they bought it from Cincinnati. The hope was that Castillo would make a difference in Seattle’s attempt to end the longest playoff drought in baseball and that the Mariners could convince him to stay longer.

They managed to lock up Castillo. And Seattle went in on Saturday with a three game lead over Baltimore for the final AL wildcard.

“Luis has been one of the best pitchers in MLB for the past six seasons,” said Jerry Dipoto, president of Baseball Operations for Mariners.

He is a dynamic power pitcher in the prime of his career with a track record of consistency. Bringing him to Seattle was a key moment in our ongoing effort to build a championship roster. Likewise, this deal illustrates our continued commitment to both the present and the future of this team.”

Castillo’s contract is reportedly worth $108 million and will begin with the 2023 season, his last season in which he will be eligible for arbitration. It will run until 2027 and includes a mutual option for 2028.

The 29-year old Castillo is 7-6 with a 2.85 ERA and strikeouts 154 in 23 starts between Seattle and Cincinnati. Since joining the Mariners, he is 3-2 with a 2.83 ERA and strikeouts 64 in nine starts.

Castillo was named to the National League All-Star team in July for his second All-Star roster.

Retaining Castillo makes for a formidable rotation for Seattle going forward. Robbie Ray was Seattle’s great asset last season and the reigning AL Cy Young Award winner is under contract until 2026. Young right-handers Logan Gilbert and George Kirby have shown flashes of dominance this season. Gilbert will be under club control until 2027 and Kirby until 2029.

Castillo is the Mariners’ second major extension in the past month after incarcerating rookie slugger Julio Rodriguez last month.
