His priest, Father Suresh Kumar, provided an update on Friday on the boy’s struggles saying the 10-year-old has been able to speak to his father Simon.

A billion thanks to God. He doesn’t have a brain injury,’ he wrote on Facebook.

“Simon can talk to him and Nicholas answers very clearly with names, dates, although his voice is a bit muddled. He’s still under partial sedation.

His mother, Vanessa, could have grabbed his head and shielded him from the impact.

‘She is a hero. Nicholas will be able to tell us when he can remember. May Vanessa’s soul rest in peace.’

Father Kumar said Nicholas’s kidney function appeared to improve after fears were raised that he might suffer kidney failure.

“The doctors have been trying to save this badly mangled right leg,” he wrote.

“We have to keep praying that his leg is not amputated, as the danger of losing it continues to loom.”
